Q&A with Catherine Wolpert

Q: What's the first step companies must take before switching to a Consumer Driven Healthcare Plan?
A: Companies should ask whether change is appropriate and achievable and what employees will think if it happens. Understanding the type and degree of resistance before implementation can assist leaders in developing an ongoing strategic approach to change.
Q: Which employees are most critical to a successful healthcare plan change?
A: Resistance is unique across all groups who are impacted, including retirees, spouses, new hires, providers and vendors. By understanding each type of resistance, business leaders can make better decisions about what it will take to implement, how and when. Unfortunately, many organizations spend too much energy deciding what new changes to make and dismiss what is required to implement those changes.
Q: How long does it take for a company to switch to a CDHP?
A: Change is rarely "finished." Companies need to be smart about how a CDHP is implemented and managed during the present. An effective change management strategy will also provide clarity around the reasons for change and definition around the future.
